Gas Heater Maintenance and Carbon Monoxide Testing
Servicing your gas heating is vitally important for protecting your family’s health and well-being in the colder months.
With summer at an end and long, chilly nights just around the corner, now is the time to check in with your home’s gas heating system.
Having your gas heater serviced annually will not only ensure that your system is in top working condition before winter hits; it significantly reduces the risk of carbon monoxide exposure.
How can gas heating affect my health?
With 82 per cent of households in Victoria using mains gas as a domestic energy source, it’s vital that Victorians understand the risks and take proper precautions. Faulty gas appliances have the potential to leak carbon monoxide (CO), which can be life threatening if inhaled.
Carbon Monoxide is an odourless, tasteless, invisible gas that has the potential to cause significant health problems even at very low atmospheric concentrations. Children, the elderly and people with existing health conditions are more likely to experience the severe effects from CO poisoning at lower concentrations.
Sadly, each year there are deaths from CO poisoning in Australia. In light of this sobering fact, Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week (April 29 to May 5, 2019) is held each year to raise awareness of the serious risk presented by inadequately maintained and monitored gas appliances.
This initiative is an important reminder to get on top of your annual gas heater servicing ahead of winter. Prolonged exposure time even at lower concentrations of CO are increasingly harmful.
How can I minimise the risk?
Energy Safe Victoria urges those with any form of gas system installed in their homes to understand the risks and warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, and have a qualified professional check for carbon monoxide leaks at least every two years in addition to regular servicing. This applies to all gas heating systems, including space heaters, central heating and wall furnaces (as well as other household appliances that run on gas, such as stoves and hot water systems).
